Stairway To Heaven - Guitar Solo This solo is based heavily on the Am (Cmajor) pentatonic scale (A C D E G). The only other notes found here are the occasional F & B, making a total note content of A B C D E F G otherwise known as the A Aeolian mode, or natural minor scale. The trickiest parts are the fast repetitive phrase between bar 9 & bar 11 and the couple of large bends towards the end of the piece. As ever treat these difficult parts as little exercises in their own right, going over them again & again until they are comfortable then gradually build up the speed. Please note that it is IMPOSSIBLE to play this solo entirely on one guitar: the 13th-12th-13th-10th fret phrase (starting in bar 13) on the 2nd string is an overdub and has been left on the backing track for you to play the main part along with. Finally, it is often assumed that Jimmy Page played this solo on a Les Paul. However, Mr Page himself insists that it was played on a Telecaster & having listened carefully to the recording several times whilst tabbing it out, I think I can hear that trademark Tele bark underneath all the overdrive. I played my interpretation on my trusty PRS SE into an AWARD SESSIONMASTER JD10 MKII direct recording preamp straight into Cakewalk recording software. Bass & drums courtesy of a BOSS DR5. Have fun!
