Time - David Gilmour This solo uses the F# minor pentatonic (F# A B C# E) as it's basis. There are also one or two instances of G# & D notes, which are added due to their presence in the underlying chords: (E & Amaj7 have a G# note in them & Bm & Dmaj7 have the D note in them). When these notes are added into F# minor pentatonic we get a total note content of F# G# A B C# D E. This expanded scale is called the F# Aeolian mode, or F# natural minor scale. If you intend to use any of these licks in your own solos, make sure that the added notes mentioned above will fit with the chords you are playing over. For example, if you have a backing which goes F#m to B, then the D note will clash with the B chord. It would be useful if you have an understanding of modes to make the best use of any mode based licks that you learn. If modes are a closed book to you, then keep an eye on this site as I have a free lesson on modes in development. Have fun, John.
